Firing on Indian Fishermen: Navy Inquiry, Compensation and Diplomatic Efforts
In a recent development, the Ministry of Defence has provided crucial updates regarding incidents involving Indian fishermen across various maritime borders. According to the Ministry's response to an unstarred question in the Lok Sabha, several cases of apprehension and unfortunate firing incidents have been addressed through diplomatic channels and appropriate actions.
Navy Inquiry and Compensation
Addressing the firing incident near Kodiakkarai, where an Indian Navy officer opened fire on Indian fishermen involved in fishing activities, the Ministry stated that a Board of Inquiry has been completed on December 18, 2022. Administrative action has been taken against the delinquent officer.
Furthermore, the government has provided compensation to the affected fishermen. Mr. Veeravel, son of Kasirajan from Vanagiri, Mayiladuthurai District, who was seriously injured in the firing, received a compensation of Rs. 2 lakhs. Six other fishermen who suffered minor injuries were paid Rs. 1.20 lakhs (Rs. 20,000 per fisherman) from the Chief Minister's Public Relief Fund.
Maldives Incident: Diplomatic Intervention
Regarding the apprehension of 12 Indian fishermen onboard the fishing vessel IND-TN-12-MM-6376 by the Maldives Navy on October 22, 2023, the Ministry confirmed that all fishermen have been safely repatriated to India after close follow-up by the High Commission of India in Male.
The High Commission of India in Male has also taken due diplomatic action with the relevant authorities in the Maldives regarding the fine imposed on the vessel.
Sri Lankan Apprehensions and Releases
In another incident, the Sri Lankan Navy apprehended 37 Indian fishermen and five fishing boats bearing registration numbers IND-TN-10-MM-860, IND-IN-10-MM-985, IND-TN-10-MM-915, IND-TN-10-MM-717, and IND-TN-10-MM-972 on October 28, 2023.
According to the Ministry, 36 of the 37 apprehended fishermen have been repatriated in November 2023, while one fisherman has been jailed for two years on charges of repeatedly crossing the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL), as he was also apprehended in 2022.
The Ministry stated that due diplomatic action has been taken for the release of the five fishing boats with the relevant authorities in Sri Lanka.
These incidents highlight the challenges faced by Indian fishermen operating in maritime borders and the efforts made by the government through diplomatic channels to ensure their safety and secure their release in the event of apprehensions or unfortunate incidents.
