Government Initiatives to Boost Quality of Education Across India

New Delhi, April 12, 2024:

Addressing concerns over the deteriorating quality of education in government-run schools compared to private institutions, the Central Government has outlined a series of initiatives aimed at improving learning outcomes and providing quality education for all students.

Key Schemes and Missions:

  1. Pradhan Mantri Schools for Rising India (PM SHRI): Approved in September 2022, this scheme aims to create exemplar schools implementing the National Education Policy 2020 to offer leadership to other schools.
  2. NIPUN Bharat Mission: Launched in July 2021 under Samagra Shiksha, this national mission focuses on ensuring foundational literacy and numeracy for every child by 2026-27 through access, teacher training, learning materials, and tracking progress.
  3. NISHTHA: Integrated training programs like NISHTHA have been introduced for teachers, principals, and educational administrators at different school levels.
  4. Rashtriya Avishkar Abhiyan: Aimed at nurturing scientific temper and innovation among children aged 6-18 years through joyful learning of science and math.
  5. National Achievement Survey (NAS): Conducted periodically to assess learning levels across grades and provide feedback to states/UTs for addressing gaps. The latest NAS was in 2021.
  6. District Institutes of Education and Training (DIET) Excellence: Revamping DIETs as vibrant teacher training institutes with a Rs 9,195 crore estimated cost.
  7. Digital Initiatives: PM eVIDYA integrates all digital/online/on-air education efforts, including DIKSHA infrastructure, energized textbooks, and expanded SWAYAM PRABHA DTH channels.

Enrollment and Higher Education Data:

According to the Unified District Information System for Education Plus (UDISE+) and All India Survey on Higher Education (AISHE) data for 2021-22 shared by the ministry, the total enrollment stands at:

  • Primary: 12,18,42,250
  • Upper Primary: 6,67,90,692
  • Secondary: 3,85,28,631
  • Higher Secondary: 2,85,79,050
  • Higher Education: 4,32,68,181

The government does not maintain specific records of students from government schools pursuing higher education after schooling.

Other Key Initiatives:

  • Holistic Progress Card for competency-based assessment
  • Innovation funds under Samagra Shiksha
  • Vidya Sameeksha Kendra for data-based decision making
  • PM JANMAN scheme for providing hostel facilities to Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs)

These schemes aim to enhance the quality of higher education across India.

The minister affirmed the government's commitment to continuously improving education quality based on feedback and latest requirements across all levels.
