India Reiterates Support for Two-State Solution to Israel-Palestine Conflict

New Delhi, April 13, 2024:

Amid escalating tensions and violence between Israel and Palestine, the Government of India has reiterated its long-standing policy of supporting a negotiated two-state solution, emphasizing the establishment of a sovereign, independent, and viable State of Palestine within secure and recognized borders, living side by side in peace with Israel.

Condemnation of Terror Attacks and Call for Restraint

Addressing the ongoing conflict, the minister stated, "India has strongly condemned the terror attacks on Israel on October 7, 2023, and the loss of civilian lives in the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict." He highlighted that India has called for restraint, de-escalation, and emphasized a peaceful resolution of the conflict through dialogue and diplomacy, as well as the release of remaining hostages.

Diplomatic Engagement at Highest Levels

In response to the escalating situation, Prime Minister and External Affairs Minister have engaged in direct communication with several leaders, including the President, Prime Minister, and Foreign Minister of Israel, as well as the President, Prime Minister, and Foreign Minister of Palestine. India has also reiterated its position in multilateral fora such as the United Nations, G20, BRICS, and the Voice of Global South Summit.

Support for Two-State Solution

Reaffirming India's long-standing policy towards Palestine, Shri Muraleedharan stated, "We have supported a negotiated two-state solution, towards the establishment of a sovereign, independent, and viable State of Palestine within secure and recognized borders, living side by side in peace with Israel."

He further highlighted that External Affairs Minister met with the Foreign Minister of Palestine on January 20, 2024, in Kampala, where India's support for the two-state solution was reiterated.

UN Resolutions and India's Voting Pattern

Addressing India's recent abstention from a UN resolution on the Israel-Palestine issue, the minister clarified, "Our voting on UN resolutions on the issue of Israel-Palestine have been in line with our stated policy."

Diplomatic Efforts for Peace

While expressing deep concern over the loss of civilian lives and the escalating violence, the Indian government has emphasized the need for restraint, de-escalation, and a peaceful resolution of the conflict through dialogue and diplomacy. India's diplomatic efforts at the highest levels, engagement with multilateral fora, and consistent support for a negotiated two-state solution underscore its commitment to finding a lasting and just solution to the long-standing Israel-Palestine conflict.

As a responsible global player and a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, India's stance on the issue is being closely watched, with the international community seeking a pragmatic and balanced approach to address one of the most complex and protracted conflicts in the region.
