New Delhi, April 12, 2024:
In line with the vision outlined in the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the Government of India has undertaken various initiatives to promote and integrate Indian cultural values into the education system, across both school and higher education levels.
Integrating Values in School Curriculum
The NEP 2020 proposes to include ethical reasoning, traditional Indian values, and all basic human and Constitutional values in the school curriculum. To attain this vision, the recently released National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCFSE) 2023 is committed to India's cultural and intellectual heritage by integrating key principles deeply rooted in the Indian context and thought.
"The framework embraces ancient traditions across various aspects of school education," stated Dr. Sarkar, highlighting the government's efforts to incorporate Indian values and knowledge systems into the school curriculum.
Promoting Indian Knowledge Systems
To promote Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS), the Ministry of Education has set up 53 IKS centers across the country through its central sector scheme "Indian Knowledge Systems." These centers aim to promote Indian values through various activities, including:
- Funding 88 research projects in 13 interdisciplinary domains to facilitate the creation of new knowledge.
- Providing 5,200 internships in various domains of IKS to promote Indian Knowledge Systems among the youth.
- Introducing Bhartiya Games and Kalashala to promote Indian games and art forms in schools.
- Conducting more than 80 faculty development programs, workshops, and conferences, training over 2,500 teachers across the country.
Higher Education Initiatives
In the higher education domain, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has issued several guidelines to promote Indian cultural values:
- Guidelines for Incorporating Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS) in Higher Education Curricula: These guidelines prescribe that every undergraduate or postgraduate student should be encouraged to take credit courses in IKS amounting to at least 5% of the total mandated credits (interested students may opt for a larger fraction).
- Guidelines for Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) for Inculcation of Human Values and Professional Ethics (Mulyapravah).
- Guidelines for introducing courses based on Indian heritage and culture.
Additionally, the UGC has trained approximately 1,000 faculty members in traditional knowledge and value systems to incorporate them into regular classroom teaching.
Stakeholder Engagement
While the minister did not provide specific details on comments or views expressed by states regarding these initiatives, the government's efforts are aimed at promoting and preserving India's rich cultural heritage and values through the education system, in alignment with the NEP 2020's vision.
As the country continues to progress and adapt to modern challenges, the integration of Indian cultural values and knowledge systems is seen as a crucial step toward nurturing well-rounded individuals and preserving the nation's intellectual and cultural legacy.
