Tackling Student Suicides: Government Outlines Initiatives & Data

New Delhi, April 12, 2024:

Highlighting the grave issue of student suicides, the Government of India today shared data and outlined various measures being taken to provide psychological support and promote mental well-being among students across the country.

KVs Report No Suicides on Campus

According to the information received from the Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS), which runs 1,251 Kendriya Vidyalayas across the country, no incidents of student suicides have been reported within the school campuses. However, KVs do have provisions to engage counselors on a contractual basis to address mental health issues among students.

Navodaya Vidyalaya Suicide Data

The Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti (NVS), which oversees 653 Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas (JNVs), provided the following data on student suicides over the last five years and the current year, categorized by social groups:

Interventions in Navodaya Vidyalayas

In response to these incidents, the NVS has introduced targeted interventions in all JNVs, including:

  1. Toll-free helpline assistance for students to express their concerns, deal with exam stress, and maintain emotional health and well-being.
  2. "Happy Hours" concept to engage students in positive talks, humor, and activities, allowing them to end each day on a positive note and begin the next with hope, happiness, and optimism.
  3. Provision for engaging two qualified counselors (one male and one female) in each JNV.

National Efforts for Mental Well-being

The minister highlighted several national-level initiatives aimed at promoting mental health and well-being among students, teachers, and families:

  • Manodarpan Initiative
  • National Education Policy 2020
  • National Curriculum Framework
  • National Suicide Prevention Strategy

These initiatives emphasize the importance of mental health in education and provide support systems to address mental health concerns.

The minister emphasized the government's recognition of the importance of mental health and its efforts to create a supportive environment for students, enabling them to thrive academically and personally.
